Face to Face Artist

Ismet Zainal Effendi ( Ize ) was borned in Cianjur on 20 April 1976. Though he was raised in a family who are in to myths and mystics, he claims to not believe in such things. He started his artist carrier in the late 90's. After graduated from high school, he went to Yogyakarta and learned graphic design at Yogya Design School, for some personal reasons he didn't finish it. After that, he studied art of painting in Yogyakarta Fine Arts Academy, for some personal reasons he couldn't finished it. In 1996, he came back to Bandung to intensively learned autodidact skills of drawing and painting. In 1997, he studied at Department Of Fine Arts, Bandung Institute Of Technology, majoring painting. This time he graduated on Mei, 2002.

Since he was in university, he's been holding exhibitions of his works and participates in painting competitions. Ize has achieved quite of reputations in national and international painting competition, such as :  

• Finalist in Asia-Europe Young Artist Competition ( 2000 ) - Seoul, South Korea
• Finalist in Indonesia Art Awards, The Philip Morris Company ( 2001 )
• Finalist in Indofood Art Awards ( 2002 and 2003 )
• Finalist in Jakarta Art Awards ( 2006 )

Ize has had interest in dark arts since the early 2000. He got the calling to make horrifying themes of works. He's liked it since junior high school. He was inspired from cassette's music covers of thrash metal, black metal, etc like : Sepultura, Iron Maiden, Nocturnus, Kreator, etc. The works of great artists such as H.R.Giger, Joachim Luetke, Leonardo Da Vinci, Michel Angelo, Salvador Dali and Frida Kahlo have given a great influence for his works. Ize's works reflect the present condition of global society, he doesn't have any interest in social realism events around him. He had more intention to sacred religious themes, also Gods and Satan. Questioning the existence of God Him self, prophets, human, angels, satan, and their histories. Some of his sources are of course the bibles from many religions and beliefs. All figures in his works were imaginations which were created by his very own thoughts and hands.

The fragments he uses were taken mostly from the Catholic which existed in many art works of middle ages ( Medieval ). Symbols are used to support the themes, and were taken from many sources available in cyber world.

Ismet ZE, young artist who now lives in Bandung, Indonesia. Other than creating art works, he also designs posters; postcards; t-shirts and covers. Ize is the only artist in Bandung or even in Indonesia who praise this genre of dark arts with gothic-diabolic impressions. He's hoping to get more friends than competitors in this genre. Other than being a multimedia tic artist, he is now also a teacher at Faculty of Fine Art and Design , Bandung Maranatha Christian University - Indonesia
